Holiday Family Fued
A Personal Narrative
by Zainisha Ogwaro

One of the most fun things to do is spend time with your family. Whether you're at home or on a road trip spending time with your family always leaves you with memories. My family is the funniest, upbeat, weirdest family, and when we get together there's no telling what will happen. Everyone in my family is different so drama always develops but we always make up.
A couple years ago my whole family went to my grandparents house in Bakersfield. My aunt and uncle come down from Africa. So it was a big deal and everyone had to come. My mother has been "the cook" for big occasions (holidays) forever and everyone knows it. The only problem is my grandmother is vegetarian and my aunt is vegan so they're always in the kitchen criticizing what she cooks. They always nag about killing animals and how unhealthy lots of salt can be. My uncle brought his girlfriend and she wasn't very social and had a bad attitude from the moment she got there. There were some little arguments on Christmas Eve but nothing too big.
On Christmas day everyone wakes up around seven in the morning feeling great. We were all happy and excited and the day was going well. My Aunt Kisa decided to wake up my uncle and his girlfriend, Laura. She went and knocked on their door and told them to wake up. After five minutes she went back and knocked on their door. They didn't come out so she went and started banging on the door. They still didn't budge so she kept on banging and yelling, "Rise and Shine."
After a couple minutes Laura opened the door very quickly and started cussing my aunt out. She was yelling back at her and soon it got everyone's attention. They eventually stopped but it had already ruined the mood for some people. Others like me were very entertained by the whole thing. The rest of the day was pretty drama free. We were outside in the backyard and we went to the park. Everything had gotten back on track and was fine until dinner. We usually sit around and talk and play games after dinner so we eat early. Plus, we don't eat the whole day since it~{!/~}s a really big dinner. Everything was fine until we all got together, in the same room, at the same table. All was going smoothly until we got on the subject my family can never talk about in the presence of my Aunt Kisa, Black History. Once you get her started you can never get her to be quiet. So the entire family starts to argue and people began to get upset so we got off the subject.  We thought that was the worse it could have gotten until religion came up. My great Uncle is a pastor so he started talking about some of the things he did back home.
Like I said, my uncle's girlfriend wasn't feeling good so she started saying all these rude things about religion and God. She was making a big deal out of nothing and disrespecting my uncle. That's when the real argument broke out. My Grandparents, my Great Uncle and Aunt, my other Uncle and Aunt, and Laura were all debating. The rest of the family knew it was hopeless to try and even get a word in. Those who weren't arguing just left the table. We ended up leaving and going to a fast food place. We ate in the parking lot and were gone for at least an hour. When we got back we were not surprised to find they were still arguing. By then it was just a routine thing that happened. So we went to the room and just hung out until they were done.
Even after the little debate the family was divided and irritable the rest of the night. My uncle's girlfriend had really ruined the day. The next day we were back to our old selves again and everything about the day before was funny but somewhat disturbing. It goes to show that family will always be family no matter what.
